Leather Jacket Buying Guide USA: Fit, Materials & Weather

Leather Jacket Buying Guide USA: Fit, Materials & Weather

Choose Your Everyday Jacket Style

The right leather jacket should work with your regular clothes, fit comfortably and provide the coverage you need. Start with the silhouette, compare the leather and lining, then choose your size using measurements. Our leather jackets in the USA bring together different styles for men and women, from streamlined café racers to relaxed bombers and substantial flight-inspired outerwear. Before choosing, picture three outfits you already own. Include your trousers, footwear and the layer underneath. A jacket that works across those combinations will be easier to wear regularly than one that requires an entirely new wardrobe. Think about your routine, too. Driving, walking to work and spending an evening outdoors place different demands on length, sleeve movement and insulation.

Biker and Café Racer Jackets

Choose a biker when you want the jacket to be the strongest element in your outfit. Lapels, an asymmetrical zipper and visible hardware provide detail over a plain T-shirt or simple knit. A café racer offers a cleaner appearance through a compact collar and simpler front. It works well with dark denim, boots and understated casual clothes. Compare our biker jackets by shoulder shape, waist and sleeve room. A defined silhouette should still let you sit, bend your elbows and reach forward comfortably.

Bomber Jackets

Choose a bomber for casual outfits built around jeans, chinos and sneakers. Its shorter body and defined hem create a relaxed shape without requiring complicated styling. Check where the waistband finishes against your trousers. Some volume above the hem belongs to the design, but excessive bunching can make the body look unbalanced. For layering, compare the jacket over your usual sweater rather than assuming every bomber has a roomy fit.

Aviator Jackets

Choose an aviator when you prefer flight-inspired pockets, substantial collars and a stronger outerwear presence. Our aviator jackets include different constructions, so compare their interiors as carefully as their appearance. A lightweight flight-inspired jacket and a heavily lined winter design serve different purposes. Check whether the collar closes comfortably and whether the jacket’s weight suits your everyday use.

Suede Jackets

Choose suede when you want texture instead of shine. Brown, tan and mocha shades complement cream knitwear, navy trousers, olive chinos and blue denim. Suede describes the surface rather than a single silhouette. You can choose a suede bomber, biker or another shape according to your wardrobe. For a closer material comparison, read our suede jacket materials, styles and care guide.

Compare Leather Types and Finishes

Leather descriptions answer different questions. Cowhide and goatskin identify animal sources. Suede describes a napped surface. Full-grain and top-grain describe how the surface has been retained or processed. Read these details together. No single term explains the complete quality, comfort or warmth of a finished jacket.

Material or finish Typical character Choose it when What else matters
Cowhide Substantial feel and defined structure You prefer a firmer silhouette Thickness, finishing and pattern
Sheepskin or lambskin Softness and supple drape Flexible everyday comfort is a priority Lining and surface finish
Goatskin Distinctive grain and flexible structure You want texture and versatility Leather thickness and processing
Genuine suede Matte, napped surface You prefer a softer visual finish Moisture exposure and surface-specific care
Faux leather Manufactured leather-look surface An animal-free outer material is your priority Coating, backing and overall composition

For a structured look, begin by comparing cowhide designs. For a softer feel, compare sheepskin or lambskin options. Then assess the complete garment: panel shape, leather thickness and lining change how it moves. Jonny N Guys offers different leather constructions across its range. For example, the Men’s Striker Black Sheepskin Leather Jacket uses sheepskin with a semi-aniline finish and quilted viscose lining. Choose by the combination of material, construction and intended use. A glossy surface does not establish better quality, and a distressed finish does not automatically indicate weaker leather.

Match Your Jacket to US Weather

Choose for the forecast and your time outdoors, rather than your state alone. Coastal and inland conditions differ, and short car journeys require less protection than an outdoor commute. The temperature bands below are practical outfit-planning guidance. They are not tested jacket ratings or regional climate averages.

Conditions US regional context Starting jacket choice Suggested layers
60–70°F, dry Mild Southern California evenings; warmer Southern shoulder-season days Lightweight bomber or café racer T-shirt or light shirt
50–59°F Cool Southeast days; transitional coastal conditions Lightly lined smooth leather Long-sleeve top or fine knit
40–49°F Northeast and Midwest shoulder seasons; cool Northwest days Lined bomber or aviator with layering room Sweater or insulating midlayer
32–39°F Cold Northeast, Midwest and inland conditions Insulated leather outerwear Base layer and insulating layer
Below 32°F Colder northern and mountain winter conditions Purpose-built winter outerwear Complete cold-weather layering system
Wet weather Pacific Northwest rain or storms elsewhere Waterproof outer protection Protect leather and suede from saturation

Northeast and Midwest

Prioritize insulation, collar coverage and room for a sweater as temperatures fall. A lightweight jacket that works during an autumn afternoon may be inadequate for a stationary winter commute. For longer outdoor exposure, consider your complete outfit, including footwear, gloves and protection from precipitation.

Pacific Northwest

Rain protection deserves as much attention as warmth. Keep suede for dry conditions and use suitable waterproof protection when wet weather is expected. A leather exterior should not be treated as a substitute for waterproof rainwear.

South and Southwest

For mild conditions and brief outings, choose a lighter construction that remains comfortable indoors. In the Southwest, compare daytime and evening temperatures before selecting a heavy jacket. A removable layer underneath can provide more flexibility than a thick interior. Our fur and shearling jacket guide explains additional considerations for warmer outerwear.

Understand US, UK and EU Sizing

US, UK and EU size labels are not universally interchangeable. Use the selected product’s measurements as your final reference. Men’s numeric US and UK jacket sizes often relate to chest measurements in inches. EU labels follow a different numbering system. Letter sizes such as Medium and Large introduce further variation between brands. A familiar men’s conversion is US/UK 40 to EU 50, but treat that as an initial reference rather than a guaranteed match. Women’s numeric US and UK labels follow different systems. Do not apply a men’s conversion to a women’s jacket or assume the same number means the same fit. Also distinguish body measurements from garment measurements. A finished jacket includes room for movement and clothing. Jonny N Guys’ published jacket charts use inches and separate “Actual Chest” from “Garment Chest,” alongside shoulder and sleeve measurements. Follow the chart for your selected product instead of adding your own allowance.

How to Measure for a Leather Jacket

Use a flexible tape, stand naturally and ask someone to help with shoulders and sleeves. Record measurements in inches. To convert, multiply inches by 2.54.

  1. Choose your normal base layer.
Wear a thin shirt for body measurements unless instructed otherwise. Note whether you plan to wear a sweater underneath the jacket.

  2. Measure your chest or bust.
Wrap the tape around the fullest area, keeping it level across your back. Breathe normally and avoid pulling the tape tight.

  3. Measure your waist and lower torso.
Record your natural waist. For longer designs, also measure where the hem will sit, including your hips when relevant.

  4. Measure shoulder width.
Ask your helper to measure between your shoulder points across the back. Follow the brand’s diagram when a specific method is provided.

  5. Measure sleeve length.
With your elbow slightly bent, measure from the shoulder point toward your preferred cuff position. Some charts start at the center back neck, so follow the requested method.

  6. Measure your preferred jacket length.
Use a jacket you already enjoy wearing to identify the hem position. Match the measurement’s starting point to the product chart.

  7. Compare a well-fitting garment.
Zip your existing jacket, lay it flat and measure across the chest. Double this only when comparing with a full garment circumference.

  8. Check your measurements again.
Repeat anything inconsistent. Keep body measurements and garment measurements clearly labeled when requesting help. Do not add extra inches automatically. The product’s sizing method determines how your measurements should be interpreted.

Use Measurements to Choose Your Size

Fit situation What to compare Recommended action
Chest falls between sizes Chest, shoulders and intended layers Choose sufficient room without excessive shoulder width
Chest fits but sleeves are short Sleeve measurement Ask about adjusted sleeve length
Shoulders fit but waist pulls Hem circumference and cut Choose a straighter silhouette or adjusted waist
You want sweater room Fit over your actual sweater Test the outfit rather than sizing up automatically
You want an oversized look Intended pattern and proportions Choose a deliberately oversized silhouette
US and EU labels differ Product-specific measurements Confirm the fit through measurements

Once worn, zip the jacket and perform three checks: sit down, reach forward and bend your elbows. The front should close without strong pulling. Your shoulders should move without persistent pinching. The collar should sit comfortably. For proportions that fall outside standard sizing, our custom leather jacket fit and personalization guide explains the available approach.

Compare Construction and Price

Look beyond the front photograph. Useful images show the back, lining, cuffs, pockets and closure. Examine visible seam alignment, zipper placement and pocket construction. Read the interior specification because a decorative collar does not establish insulation through the body and sleeves. Compare jackets with similar materials and construction before judging value.

Understand Break-In and Care

Break-in improves flexibility; it should not be used to rescue an incorrect size. Firm leather can soften through normal wear, but insufficient chest room or narrow shoulders remain fitting problems. Softer leather may feel comfortable immediately. Wear the jacket during ordinary activities. Avoid soaking it, forcing stretches or using heat to accelerate softening. For storage, use a supportive hanger in a dry, ventilated space. Keep the jacket away from radiators and prolonged direct sunlight. Use care products suitable for its finish. Smooth leather conditioner is not a universal treatment, particularly for suede. Our leather jacket cleaning, conditioning and storage guide provides further maintenance guidance.
